What does nocturnal mean?

  • Nocturnal animals are a group of animals whose bodies are built to be active at night and rest during the daylight hours.

  • Their bodies have adapted to have heightened senses in order to cope with the darkness around them; this includes better hearing and a better sense of smell.

What does crepuscular mean?

  • Very few animals are actually entirely nocturnal! Many animals that we believe to be completely nocturnal are actually crepuscular animals. This means that their bodies are most active between sunrise and sunset, they use low lighting conditions to help them hunt and avoid other predators that would be awake and able to spot them during harsher daylight conditions.

Why have I seen them during the day time?

There are many reasons why you might see a nocturnal animal during the daylight hours, these include:

  • Habitat disruption and food shortages.

→ City developments in particular but any kind of human activity that disrupts their habitat can also disrupt the normal rest hours of a nocturnal animal, they may be forced to find new homes or adapt more to the activities and routines of the humans around them. This includes disrupting their access to food, which would mean that nocturnal animals could have to walk further and stay out for longer to find enough food for themselves and their families.

  • An increase in food needs.

→ New mothers need to find more food for their young.

  • Environmental changes.

→Colder temperatures than usual or an increase in daylight hours might force nocturnal animals to leave their dens and rest states earlier than usual.

Are humans nocturnal or crepuscular?

Are humans nocturnal or crepuscular? 〰️

They are actually neither! Humans are diurnal and can never become entirely nocturnal or crepuscular, no matter how late you like to stay up on the weekend.

Diurnal creatures, such as humans, are active during daylight hours and sleep during the night.

Human bodies have something called the circadian rhythm, that is like an internal clock, which is responsible for regulating your body and its processes. If you stay awake too late, you can throw your circadian rhythm off track and might think that you are crepuscular or nocturnal for a while. In the end, you will notice that you are grumpier, sleepier, more forgetful and that your whole body is less healthy if you don’t rest when you should. This is because human bodies repair themselves while you sleep at night!  Your brain also uses this as a chance to sort through all the things you have done during the day and remember what you have learnt.
